Why is the Charpy impact test so important?

Introduction

Many people mistakenly believe that if the steel has sufficient strength, it is inherently safe. However, they overlook a fatal risk: even high-strength materials can suddenly undergo brittle fractures without any warning, leading to engineering accidents. And the method that can effectively assess this risk is the Charpy impact test. This test measures the energy absorbed by the material before it fractures, thereby studying the ductile and brittle behaviors of metallic materials at normal temperatures, high temperatures, or low temperatures.

To conduct a successful Charpy impact test, a stable, precise and standard-compliant impact testing machine is indispensable. The Liangong testing machine is the ideal choice for material toughness testing.

1.Charpy Impact Test: "Safety Check" for Engineering Structures

The Charpy impact test involves releasing a pendulum from a specified height to strike a notched specimen, thereby measuring the impact energy absorbed (Ak) and the impact toughness of the material.

· High energy absorption → The material has good toughness, and will undergo significant plastic deformation before breaking. There will be clear warning signs, and it is less likely to experience sudden brittle fracture.

· Low energy absorption → The material is highly brittle, with minimal or even no plastic deformation before failure. It is prone to sudden failure without any obvious warning signs.

However, the notches of the Charpy impact test specimens are not randomly processed. They must comply with the requirements specified in relevant standards (such as GB/T 229, ISO 148-1, ASTM E23, etc.), including the shape, depth, and roughness of the notches. Special processing equipment (such as the hydraulic notch lathe for impact test specimens provided by Liangong Testing, which uses patented technology and ensures the geometric accuracy of the pendulum impact test specimen notches fully) is used for this purpose.

After the notch processing is completed, in order to further verify whether the sample notch meets the standard requirements, an impact specimen notch projector is also needed to conduct enlarged detection and verification of the notch. (For example, the impact specimen notch projector provided by Liangong Testing has its own intellectual property rights and related patents. The screen has clear graduations, and it also indicates the tolerance range, angle value, and depth line. It can accurately read the geometric size error of the notch, ensuring that the sample complies with the test standards.)

2.The key points that must be controlled in the experiment

Test temperature: ranging from -20℃, -60℃, -110℃, all the way down to -196℃ and -270℃ ultra-low temperatures (For instance, in order to meet the temperature requirements for various materials in testing, Liangong Testing has developed and produced multiple types of low-temperature impact testers. The regular products can cover the testing temperature range from +600℃ to -196℃. Moreover, according to customer needs, a dual-space liquid helium impact tester with -196℃ and -270℃ temperature ranges has also been specially developed and produced.)

Notch: V-shaped gap / U-shaped gap (determined specifically based on standards and requirements)

Absorb energy (in joules J): Meet the specification requirements (such as 47J/60J/120J, etc.)

Fracture morphology: Brittle fracture (fibrous, plastic deformation) / Ductile fracture (shiny and flat, sudden breakage)

Data Basis: For each batch of samples, if there are 3 or more samples of the same specification and tested under the same conditions, the average value after eliminating abnormal values shall be taken as the basis for evaluating the material's impact toughness (the specific number of samples and the criteria for identifying abnormal values shall be determined according to relevant testing standards and actual test requirements).

3.Covering key applications in all scenarios

The Charpy impact test is a mandatory inspection item for key components/materials (subject to impact loads and at risk of brittle fracture) in the following fields (in accordance with the requirements of the corresponding national or industry standards):

Pressure vessels (pressure-bearing components), pressure-bearing industrial pipelines

Marine engineering structural steel, key structural steel for ships

Low-temperature service equipment subjected to impact loads

Structural steel for buildings in cold climates (such as steel used for bridges and the load-bearing structures of high-rise buildings)

4.Realistic engineering insights

The two materials may have the same yield strength and tensile strength, but there is a significant difference in impact toughness. The two materials may have the same yield strength and tensile strength, but there is a significant difference in impact toughness. Just relying on strength indicators cannot detect the potential brittle fracture hazards of the materials. Only through the Charpy impact test can the difference in toughness between the materials be accurately exposed, thus laying the first line of defense for engineering safety.

The Charpy Impact Testing Machine is the core essential equipment for conducting this test. Therefore, purchasing an impact testing machine that complies with relevant standards, provides accurate data, is stable and reliable, and is suitable for actual testing requirements is an important step to ensure the accuracy of material performance testing and to avoid engineering safety risks.

The impact testing machine provided by Liangong Testing takes into account both stability and detection accuracy in its structural design. The total friction loss absorption power is less than 0.5% of the energy nominal value (in line with the requirements of relevant testing standards). The main body and base of the equipment are made of cast steel, which is rigid, stable, resistant to impact and not prone to deformation, ensuring long-term stable operation and durability.

Moreover, there is a high-end fully automatic model equipped with a robot system and an automatic low-temperature instrument, which can achieve large-scale testing without human intervention, compatible with 24-hour continuous operation, with a 72-hour failure rate of only 0.8%, and can efficiently meet the needs of industrial large-scale testing.

Strength determines the upper limit of a material's load-bearing capacity, while toughness determines the safety bottom line of an engineering project.

Both aspects are indispensable. If one only focuses on the strength indicators without conducting the Schaeffer impact test, it is equivalent to planting an invisible bomb for engineering safety.
